Dental Hygiene, but I hated Dental Assistant?

hey you guys my father and mother are always talking about me going into a dental hygiene program I decided to do dental assisting and it absolutely sucked I hated everything from four handed dentistry and do mounting x-rays very boring and just tedious is dental hygiene any different if I don't like dental assisting at all in any type of shape or form will I not like dental hygiene either? please feeback I'm thinking about doing massage therapy since I care about my parents back conditions I think about how cool it would be helping people with bones but it seems dental hygiene has me fiening since they pay soo darn good what should I do help!!

Dental Hygiene, but I hated Dental Assistant?
From what I have been told- they are worlds apart. But given the fact that you do not like the dental assisting, I don't know if I would recommend becoming a dental hygienist.

Dental hygienists ,while true they do clean teeth, can go in and get additional certifications for more complex procedures depending on the dental practice. This can put them into more of an independent situation and allow them diversity in their career.

If you like patient contact and are looking outside of the dental office, I would check into nursing or physical therapy. If you are looking to stay within the medical area, but would like to earn a decent living without nonstop patient contact, then try radiology as a tech or respiratory therapy.

Message therapy may or may not get you into the financial situation that you were looking at. Depending on the area, they tend to earn less than the careers I mentioned above. If money is not your only motivating factor then heck - GO FOR IT.

Good Luck.
Reply:If you think assisting is boring.......try doing nothing but cleaning teeth day in and day out.......at least when you assist you get a variety. I would say try a different field, I would think if you find dentistry boring and tedious then it probably isn't for you. hygienist do make good money but it isn't worth it if you are miserable and bored everyday.
Reply:If you hated dental assisting because it was 'tedious and boring', then forget about dental hygiene... as a hygienist, you'll still be taking and mounting xrays, as well as doing the same procedure over and over and over again (cleanings, scalings, debridements, etc..) for each patient...and let's not forget OHI and TBI....

Yes, the pay is great for hygienists, but it's also earned.. you don't fall in to the 'high pay' catagory the second you graduate from hygiene school and apply and receive your state license...
Reply:I personally wouldn't go into dental hygiene. I am a dental assistant as well and I was looking into hygiene, however there are so my hygienists and there really is not a high demand for them. In my office the girls have to work two sometimes three offices to make full time. I would look into nursing. In my area the demand for nurses is very high and they get paid very well. Good luck.
Reply:Dental Hygiene is much more boring than Dental Assisting. Sounds like you might like Physical Therapy. I dont like General Dentistry, but love Oral Surgery. Not as tedious and has alot more patient care, like nursing.
Reply:I am a parent %26amp; grandmother and can tell you that do not pursue dental hygiene. You have stated you do not like it and know you will not like it. That's your answer.

Now moving to something ....beneficial...for you and your future. You are thinking about massage therapy which is in the area of serving the public and helping people. I would start out with investing a small amount of money to this area to see if this is the type of life you would enjoy. Remember you have to walk in the shoes to really know what its all about. for example

Waxing/ Big Business nowadays?? one suggestion

In the waxing category there is a type of waxing called "Alexandria sugaring" which is the art of waxing with honey/sugar combination. This course is less than a month for a fee? not sure what the cost is but it would give you the a) certification immediately

ability to start and register a business name

with a portable table you could start out parttime for a fee and do service calls at clients homes or setup a place of your own

business cards can be made and setup to indicate what hours you want to work?

This type of licensing is quick and cheap. Lot less than esthicians license.

With it you can negotiate a spot in a salon/spa and setup clients. This also would give you insight to learn the business and different things a spa does.

With this knowledge and time, eventually you could have some money saved to open one fabulous SPA and who knows maybe many more all across the world. If this is where you will be, then you have conquered a dream and been versatile and open minded in the process. ! Best of Luck in planning your future, LMH...
