What is the difference between a dental assistant and a dental assistant specialist?

A specialist is an associate degree. I know that much, but other than that it looks like a specialist is a hygienist. What is the wage between the assistant and the specialist? Need to know before Tuesday please.

Reply:Do you live in the US? I do not believe there is a position known as a dental assistant specialist, unless it is a particular state's formed position. There are expanded duties assistants, but they do not require an associates degree, these assistants usually have more training to do more duties, which are different state to state. There are dental hygienists, in no way related to a dental assistant. Their job is completely different, although they can perform any assistants duties. Dental hygienists see patients fro preventive services like 'cleanings', they also place sealants and give Fluoride treatment, they also treat gum disease, and in most states can anesthetize patients for treatment. The assistants work with the doctor, helping him or her with restorative treatment (fillings, crowns, etc.) Hygienists work in their own room seeing patients, but most of the time need to have the dentist come in and see the patient for an exam at some point in the appointment.


Assistants can usually be trained on the job, with a high school education. Hygienists need at least an associates degree and national and state licensing.


Wages are quite different, with assistants usually making about half (or a bit more) of what a hygienist does. Of course actual wages depend on the state and area.
