Do I need to be a dental assistant before I'm a dental Hygienist?

If I don't have any dental experience, will that affect my chances of being accepted into Dental Hygiene school?

Do I need to be a dental assistant before I'm a dental Hygienist?
You can enter either assistant schooling or hygiene school with no experience. It's fine either way. There is more schooling for hygiene as they clean below the gum surface as to where an assistant must stay above the gingival tissue. That's basically the only difference in what they are allowed to do.
Reply:No, although it might be helpful for you do so some interning at a dental office.

The main thing that will keep you out of dental hygiene school is grades. The pre-requisites are demanding and you must maintain a high GPA to be accepted to most schools.

If you have a dentist, ask if you can job shadow or intern in their office. Work for free if you have to. That way at least you'll know if you really want to work in that environment.
Reply:Dental Hygiene programs really want to see their applicants with a degree of some sort. The profession is expecting higher and higher standards from their entering students. Being a dental assistant isn't really going to have an impact on being accepted to hygiene school.
