Average dental assistant salaries?

I have been a dental assistant for almost 10 years. I have been a head assistant in the last 3 offices that I have worked in (over the past 8 years). The most I have made in this field is $16.50 an hour. I have heard of dental assistants in large cities like Dallas making over $22.00 an hour. Every dentist I have worked for as praised me on my skill, but seems to feel that paying an assistant over $16.50 is too much. What are other assistants with this type of experience making an hour?

in arkansas, no matter how qualified an assistant you are- it seems that they do not want to pay more than 12 or so an hour in the bigger cities and if you are in more rural areas- you can not expect more than 11 ish an hour IF you are very lucky.

in tennessee, the salary was a little higher in memphis. when i left there 6 years ago= i was making 14 an hour and felt lucky to be making that because if you went out of the city- it dropped to 8 or 9 an hour.

it's discouraging , really, to have the qualifications that an assistant such as myself has and to not be able to find a place to be utilized to the best of my abilities and also to receive adequate and fair pay .
Reply:You can find that info on various career sites like AOL's career area, Monster.com and probably even somewhere on Yahoo! I am in a very small town, so I can't comment on Dallas salaries. An x-ray license is a real plus, though.
Reply:In most larger cities, expanded duties assistants can make more the $20 per hour.

What value do you bring to the practice? Do you increase production by doing all the law allows so the doctor can see more patients? Do you reduce costs by finding good deals on dental supplies? Are you always taking on new skills and responsibilities? Do patients ask for you when they call for an appointment?

If you are at the top of your game, it doesn't matter where you live. A first-rate practice will pay good money to keep you.
Reply:Im in Woodstock, Ga. making 18/hr. what state do you live in and city? you can also check out salary.com they'll ask what city and state and give you average figures. good luck, sounds like your boss is being cheap. i also know if you work for a corporation you wont get paid nearly as much as you would in a private office. may want to consider going that route.
