I am interested in persuing a career in the dental industry. Is there any dental hygienists or assistants out there who can tell me how long would I have to go to school for each one, and how difficult it would be. It's a big deal for me because I'm 40 and this is a whole new thing for me.
I am interested in being a dental hygienist or dental assistant?
Dental Hygienist: There are 2 different program types to become a hygienist. There is the associate's degree program and the bachelor's degree program. To obtain your associate's degree in hygiene it takes approximately 2 1/2 - 3 years.... 2 years of hygiene school plus a semester or two to take pre-requisite classes. To obtain your bachelor's degree in hygiene takes 4 years. Once graduated from your hygiene program, you will be required to take an exam administered by your State Board of Dental Examiners that you must pass in order to receive your license to practice in your state.
Dental Assistant: Dental assisting programs vary greatly. They could range from about 7 months to 2 or 3 semesters. Generally only a technical certificate is obtained to become a dental assistant. Also, depending on the state you live in, the functions of a dental assistant vary. Assistants are allowed to do certain things in some states that they aren't allowed to do in other states.... for one example.. packing a cord during a crown prep procedure. There are Certified Dental Assistants and Expanded Duty Dental Assistants... tests are given once finished with schooling for both the CDA and the EDA. An assistant is required to hold a radiology license within the state they are working in order to be able to take x-rays.
Reply:no clue
Reply:Go for some short courses on that, then apply to openings. That is a better way to start before specializing fully on it
Reply:Dental Hygienists have a substantial higher salary than assistants, so make it worth the while!

Does anyone know the recommended courses that should be taken in high school to become a dental assistant.?
also how much college would I have to go through to become a dental assistant
Does anyone know the recommended courses that should be taken in high school to become a dental assistant.?
Biology for sure.
Reply:Not knowing where you are in your high school education I would check with the guidance consular or better yet check with a school that offers the course. There is nothing technical about being a dental assistant or dental technician.
You could even ask your dentist or someone who works there.
This way if you have any questions you can ask.
Reply:Wow. It's not hard to be a dental assistant. Hardly any requirements at all to enter a training program.
Take biology and chemistry.

Is it true that at 15 yrs old i can find a job as a dental assistant?
i know in the future i am going to try to become a dentist. someone who is in her last year of dentistry school told me i should find a job as a dental assistant at my age as long asthey are willing to train me. if anyone has details on this i would appreciate answers as well as what the job involves if possible.
Is it true that at 15 yrs old i can find a job as a dental assistant?
http://www.bls.gov/oco/ocos163.htm
this website is for the US department of labor
it gives all the details you are looking for
give it a try and then speak to your dentist for a start
as far as general work related laws for minors the departments website "youthrules" can answer all those questions such as hours you can work, how many hours, min wage, permits etcetra.
http://www.youthrules.dol.gov/
EDIT:
in most states you can work as a "practical dentist assistant"
this is an unlicensed position that requires direct/constant supervision of the dentist. this classification is for those who are in a registered class or those being trained in office by the dentist. you still have to work following all the laws regarding minors employment.
you can get state specific info about dental assistant at this site:
http://www.danb.org/main/statespecificin...
this is the website for the
Dental Assistant National Board
Reply:i doubt it. i know certified nursing assistans have to be 16 and i think dental assistants would have to be at least that (dental assistants have more training than certified nursing assitants)

Would you make more money being as a Veterinary Technician or a Dental Assistant?
Doesn't a Vet tech make 10.00 an hour? Same goes for a Dental Assistant right?
Would you make more money being as a Veterinary Technician or a Dental Assistant?
Depends on where you live. Assuming that you don't want to become a dentist or a vet - go with the one that will make you happier - cleaning teeth or cleaning up after animals. At least the animals won't try to talk to you when your hands are in their mouth :)
Reply:I wouldn't make more money at either of those because I would suck at it.

I don't want to work in the back as a dental assistant, i want work in the office, what do i put on my resume
I'm a dental assistant, but i want to work in the front office, i have no experience up front......I'm looking for a new job, but my resume just talks about working with the doctor....i have great costumer service and cash register experience....how would i change that??
I don't want to work in the back as a dental assistant, i want work in the office, what do i put on my resume
Put that on your resume that you have good customer service and cash register skills. Plus, you mainly talk about that at your interview and you can tell them there what position you want.
Reply:For your opening line you canput "I am looking for employment that can utilize the customer service skills that I have learned while also giving me the opportunity to stay in the medical field"

If you join the air force as a mental or dental assistant what are odds of being sent to Iraq?
My husband wants to join as a mental or dental assistant. He swears that he will be sent to a place where we can be together. Is this true?
If you join the air force as a mental or dental assistant what are odds of being sent to Iraq?
First thing he will be sent where he is needed. if it is iraq then it will be iraq.
Reply:If you join the US military then you need a mental checkup and better, deserve to be shot up the Iraqis for invading and destroying their nation.
No one should be enlisting in the current Nazi US military until it quits its illegal occupation of Iraq.
Bush and his cronies and war mongers have destroyed America, why do you want to help them more?
Reply:The majority of the troops in Iraq are support personnel. And given the present circumstances, I'd say the chances are pretty good that he'd be going.
Reply:No.
He takes the same oath as everyone else who joined - no matter what the job is. If he (and you) are not prepared to make the same sacrafices as other men and women who volunteer to go into harms way to protect others, then perhaps you should look elsewhere for employment.

Reply:Generally I would trust your husband.
And I am not going to pretend to know anything about the way the military does bussiness, but I know a good amount about the Iraq war. Right now troop levels are spread so thin , and with the tours being lengthened the military is stretched to the breaking point. If he has any combat training he might be deployed to Iraq. I mean, Hell, you can be 44 years old and they will still let you sign up right now.
Good chances are though, he knows more than I do about his job and is telling you what he is being told. I would imagine a dentist would not be sent to Iraq, as it is a specialty job and the government tends to treat those well. And I am sure he has requested duty in a non combat zone. If he does get sent as support he will be out of harms way and safe, at least.
So breathe easy!

Is it okay for a guy to be a dental assistant?
Would you feel awkward with a male dental assistant?
Is it okay for a guy to be a dental assistant?
I'm all for it, I use to work with one at the hospital clinic, he trained in the Navy, he was wonderful. I don't understand why more guys don't do it. The DDS would love it ,no maternity leave, no PMS, we always said there was too much estrogen in the office.

I'd prefer not to look up at someone's boobs the whole time.
That, and I have a feeling that a guy would be less likely to make stupid small talk about the weather and whatever song is on the radio. I don't feel like talking about hurricanes and music genres when I'm trying not to choke on toothpaste.
Reply:I think it will be ok. It's just a sexist thing. Nowhere in legal papers does it say male doctors/female doctors or male nurses/female nurses. Goo for it, if it makes you happy.
Reply:i have a male dentist and he's awesome.
Reply:There is nothing wrong with a male dental assistant. I'm a nurse and have worked with many males as nurses and assistants. It's just great that you are wanting to do something rewarding with a good future.
Reply:It has been regarded as strictly a female position for years although recently there have been a few males venture into this area. If you think the pay scale is something acceptable then I see no reason why you shouldn't proceed with training or college. You may be faced with hardship in finding a position though, as this is considered more of a compassionate caregiver role which the "female gender" seems more suitable. Good luck!
Additional information: Emmalue is correct to some extent, a male assistant is not as accepted into this area of dentistry as well as women are. I think the main reason is not the lack of skill as it is in knowing that the salary end will never be substantial enough and advancement would be limited or nonexistent. I don't think anyone is intimidated or threatened by a male working in this position, more so as it is in knowing that although it may be satisfying to some degree and a man can do the job as well as a woman, it just would not be a good career choice for them based on salary and advancement thus, making it a temporary position at best. Males are seen more in the role "of a dentist" rather than an assistant. It was unheard of to see a woman in the role of the “dentist” for a very long time, although times have changed and more and more women are stepping into this career, so perhaps one day there will be more of an opportunity for males to enter this career.

Reply:Honestly, I would not want to work with a male dental assistant. We girls joke, cut up, and talk about some really personal things, so having a guy working that close with us, would just be weird.
Reply:In all honesty, it would be an uphill climb. If you asked most dentists, they'd tell you "sure, a well-qualified male assistant would be welcome", but the reality is, there is an underlying prejudice.
A few years ago, my practice (at my urging) took on a male intern who was attending school to become an assistant. He did a great job, the other assistants liked him, patients accepted him, and he learned fast. When it came time for him to graduate, we could have hired him as a full-time assistant. Just could not talk the boss into hiring him, although no clear reason was given. I've gotten the same reaction from female dentists.
Hopefully, these gender specific jobs will someday open to everyone who is qualified. But for right now, male dental assistants will be a rarity.

I'm thinking about a career in Radiology or Dental assistant, What do you think?
I think I could get certified as a dental assistant faster, but radiologist is a bit better. Any of you know, anyone in these careers? do they like it? what's your opinion?
I'm thinking about a career in Radiology or Dental assistant, What do you think?
Follow your heart - the money will follow. Don't settle for something because it is 'quicker' or because it is initially more 'lucrative'
Both are good choices - I am in neither - but I believe I would lean more to radiology because;
1) I would rather make x-rays than poke around in someones mouth
2) Radiology might lend itself more to an independent or 'free-lance' opportunities in the future
3) Radiology might offer an even better path for advancement in the future
In the end, your choice - you have a great future in front of you. Follow your heart and stay focused.
Reply:It would be very hard to do both with a helmet on..
Reply:do what feels right 4 u not what job is faster n easy money
Reply:I have heard being a radiologist is a fun and interesting job. A dental assistant might be fun, but if it's not what you really want, you shouldn't waste your time with something you don't enjoy.
Reply:radiology is the way to go, my husband is in school for it, he says its hard but he likes it, and you make more money.

I have been looking for a post secondary school to get my Dental assistant certificate, but how do I know which is the best school. Of course they each say that they are the Top school, but how do I prove it??
How do I find out which is the best Dental assistant school in San Diego?
I would recommend the following:
1) Do a survey of some of the best dentists in the San Diego Area.
2) Do a survey of some of the students currently enrolled in the program.
Based on my personal experience, I've found both of the above to be pretty effective. Professionals are well aware of the best programs because they tend to work with a lot of the programs' graduates and have a good take on how well they were taught in school. And the students, who are 3 to 4 years into the programs (or close to graduation), are very aware of the pros and cons of their programs and what the competition in other schools are like. Visit the schools, and get permission from the departments to sit in a couple of the advanced classes. Before or after the class, talk to the students. You'll be surprised at how candid they are.
Criteria to determine in putting together your surveys are:
-- Is the equipment that is used to teach in these schools the latest and greatest in technology? or is it something that was used 10 years ago?
-- What are the credentials of the professors. Have they been in academia for their entire professional career, or do they have experience as practitioners (the latter is VERY important, because that means what they teach is grounded in reality)
-- Is the curriculum well-rounded? Meaning does it provide a good foundation of basic courses/knowledge, as well as courses focusing on specialized or advanced topics.
-- Is there any assistance with helping you get placed in good jobs.
-- Do you know where you want to work once you graduate or at least the type of working atomosphere you prefer? If you do, find out which programs/schools these professionals got their training from.
Good luck!
Reply:It depends what you think is better. In my opinion, the less money owed in student loans, the better. I know a few people who have went to trade schools, bryman, united Concordia, etc to be dental assistants and their student loans are outrageous. a lot of community colleges offer the classes for cheaper and also ROP has them. The ROP classes are extremely cheap and a friend of mine that went through them has no problems getting well paying jobs.
Reply:I would call around to dentist offices and see what they say...They would know best!
Reply:Simply ask various dentists their opinion on which dental assistant school has put out the best assistants.

Does any one currently have a career as a dental assistant, or know someone who does? What is the pay like?
I am going into a dental assistant program here in Florence, SC and wonder the in's and out's of this profession. Can anyone offer me some help?
Does any one currently have a career as a dental assistant, or know someone who does? What is the pay like?
Dental assistant's jobs are fairly easy once you get the hang of everything. I wouldn't suggest this job for you if you don't like working with the public, because that will be your main job. You'll get the room ready for the patients, bring them back, and assist the dentist. You'll also develop x-rays, clean up the room, and do other duties that need done for the patient. Basically, you do everything so that the dentist can come in, talk to the patient, and do his procedure. Everything else will be up to you.
Reply:my best friends mom is a dental hygienist. the pay is not the best but it's not horrible
Reply:Hello My wife has been a dental assistant for several years. The pay varies by state of course but in MS 10-15 an hr. AZ 15-22hr
Reply:not much. dental asst's are like customer service reps of the dental field. they're a dime a dozen and qualification to be one can be gained fairly quickly.

My friend who is [almost] 17 just got a job as a dental assistant! wtf?
I am serious. She just got a job as a dental assistant and she's still in high school! I know for a fact that she's not lying but that was a major shock for me. She is smart but people actually go to college to be a dental assistants. She gets $10 per hour which is a lot.
I'm majorly pissed off because my mom makes $6.50 and my dad makes $13 per hour. They work their as*ses off from 5 am to 9 pm just to pay for bills! They had no money for college and when they were young, living in Europe, they were not allowed to go to school.
Would you be angry/mad/pissed off if someone who is not qualified to do a certain job was hired by someone?
My friend who is [almost] 17 just got a job as a dental assistant! wtf?
Dental assistants make a lot more then 10 dollars an hour. She might be a receptionist.
Reply:A lot of Dentists like to train their assistants to their qualifications.
I am interested in your post because you seem to be pissed at your friend for landing a great job....and seriously, what do your parents have to do with it? I think that you should be happy for your friend; if she is not already qualified, she soon will be.
Reply:Wow. I mean DOUBLE WOW.
What is your problem????
Is it easier to bellyache about someone else who is doing something positive than it is to look at your own situation - honestly?
It doesn't take a rocket scientist to hand a dentist tools or to hold a suction tube, for goodness sake!
Honestly... whatever is wrong with your parents - that's their deal. Not yours. And definitely has got NOTHING to do with someone you know who is doing something that you are jealous of for some reason.
Whatever is holding you back (that has got you so angry) is a problem that squarely sits on your own shoulders.
I strongly suggest you breathe.... think about what you really want for yourself... and then start taking small steps to become/do what you want.
It's difficult to be successful hanging with idiots or with people with crap attitudes. Start there.
Make decisions that help you in your journey... instead of ranting about someone doing well... take that energy and decide what you want for yourself.
Reply:Maybe she's considered a dental assistant which is technically not a Dental Technician or Dental Hygenist. So she may be telling the truth, but she doesn's clean teeth or assist in oral surgeries and such, she probably stocks supplies for the examination rooms and such. No one would want to let someone with no experience or college training be responsible for someone else's teeth. Think about it. I give her "Kudo's" for finding a job like that not a job at a food chain of sorts like most kids first jobs usually are. Be happy for her and maybe you'll find something equally as good if not better. Think positive!
Reply:Why would you be pissed? I would ultimately be happy for my friend. There are different reason employers hire people, and many hire based on personality and willingness to learn, not necessarily how much they know. Sometimes employers feel more comfortable with on the job training rather than having hire someone who went to college (and paying a lot more!) because there are somethings you don't learn in school.

How much do you get paid as a dental assistant per hour?
i'm a dental assistant, and i think my boss is ripping me off! i only get $9 an hour ( i live in the Denver area).... please excuse me for being nosey and rude, but i need to know if i'm recieving fair wage. thank you.
How much do you get paid as a dental assistant per hour?
check www.salary.com.. it compares salaries and wages to the average a person should make in each category...
u sound like u have a LOT of experience..and i have a friend who's sister is a dental hygenist and she makes a LOT of money, doesn't even work every day!! keep researching!
Reply:i all depends where you work. ANd it depends a lot if you went to school or not. If you went to school then, it should be $11 to $16 but it all depends on your dentist also. Report It
Reply:It's the same here in California too. Good luck...Maybe go back to school and further your education. I hear hygienists do well and can make their own schedule..My girlfriend was in the same predicament. She changed professions.
Reply:Dental assistants typically start out a little better than minimum wage. If there is a dental placement agency in Denver, they would be able to tell you what the hourly range is for a starting assistant.
If you prove yourself to be a valuable addition to the team and if you improve your skills (start with spelling) you will likely be offered regular increases.
Are the other members of your team happy? How long have they been there? If it's a great place to work, team loyalty will be obvious with very little turnover.
However, if you already feel you are being "ripped off", chances are the relationship isn't starting out too well.
Reply:Believe me my friend, i am a qualified and registered Dental Nurse from the UK and my company are ripping me off big time, despite having years of experience and a recognized qualification they pay me less than £8 an hour!
Shocking i know and maybe should tell them to shove their job, but i really like the people i work with.

What is the most lucrative specialty for a Dental Assistant?
I've heard it's Orthodontics and Surgery. I am about to graduate and will be a Registered Dental Assistant. I am trying to figure out how to make the best living while I continue my education.
If anyone can tell me how much they make doing what they're doing or which field pays more in California, that would be great. Thanks!
What is the most lucrative specialty for a Dental Assistant?
PLEASE, don't go into dental assisting to make the most money! You need to like what you do and the people you work with. In most cases you will make more money staying in an office that skipping around looking for cash. I know you are trying to find a way to make a living and being a R.D.A. is great. Try contacting The American Dental Association to find out the average pay in your area. Personally, I love periodontics and Oral Surgery, but I have also worked in GP offices and Ortho. and each have their advantages and disadvantages. Go with your heart and talk to your instructors they should have the best ideas for your area. Best of Luck, congrats on graduation.

How much can i make as a dental assistant?
i am a guy about to turn 16 and am looking for a job as a dental assistant, one that is willing to train. the reason for this is because i am looking to become a doctor in the future and i feel this job would be good experience. someone who just finished at NYUDC told me this is what she did. hopefully there are some dentists here who could tell all about what i can do. thank you sooooo much in advance.
How much can i make as a dental assistant?
You may have a hard time finding a dentist's office to train you, because most people complete a Dental Assisting program at a technical school and graduate with a certificate. Therefore, they are already trained for the job.
Here is the salary info for Dent. Assist:
The median dental assistant salary is $31,739, with the higher 75th percentile earning $34,709 and the lower 25th earning $28,446.*
Many dental assistant positions are salaried, guaranteeing you a regular paycheck. Private practices often have fewer hours (3 or 4 days per week), allowing you an easy schedule that complements your lifestyle.
The benefits packages offered to dental assistants vary from one practice to another, but can include:
Paid vacation
Paid holidays
Free dental care
Paid sick leave
Reimbursement for continuing education
401(k) pension plan
Health insurance
Uniform allowance
Dental assistants with experience have higher earning potential. Also, the salary of a dental assistant depends primarily upon the responsibilities associated with the specific position and the geographic location of employment.

Can someone survive off the lifestyle of a dental assistant?
I'd either be working on my bachelor's degree or will have it finished and I'm getting certification as a dental assistant. I want to enter dental school however right now I'm 18 and I already have 60 credits, and I'm tired of going at it constantly. I feel like I'm killing myself just to prove to my parents but I know deep down I can do whatever I set my mind to, and it doesn't have to be "super fast". Most kids my age just started college anyway. A yr extra to take credits at ease and just relax seems good to me now. I don't even know what I'd save by speeding everything up by a year. I mean I'll be doing this profession the rest of my life anyway.
Can someone survive off the lifestyle of a dental assistant?
Dental school isn't going anywhere!!!
I wish I had done some traveling, seen some new faces and so forth before "being in a family way" (I was only 19)
Once you get into the world of work, it's hard to get out. Why do I say that? Work means getting there reliably. That means a car, often payments. Work also means having the right clothes, equipment, continuing education (often at your own expense), etc. Dunno if you're still at home but work means frustration.. often leading to the NEED for your own space, just to deflate.
I'm not saying schmooze off your folks, or kill your dream, or whatever. But please (can I live vicariously a bit here?) take a little time to smell the roses along the way. I get a sniff here and there, but it's not like having the time to do it as I'd like to.
(I got wise, and I am working on having that time for myself again)
Good luck

Should I become a Respiratory Therapist, or Dental Assistant?
I have been in school for two years now and I was finally accepted into the Respiratory program and then the program chair lady told us we wouldn't be done until May of 2010 and I almost had a heart attack! Dental Assistant is only 3 semesters but the pay is crap compared to Respiratory Therapist.
Should I become a Respiratory Therapist, or Dental Assistant?
If you are choosing between respiratory therapy and dental assisting, then respiratory therapy is definitely the better choice. Respiratory therapy is a in demand profession and the opportunities are vast. You will hardly be out of work and the pay is good as a respiratory therapist.
However, you need to know that there is a difference between a dental hygienist and a dental assistant.
You should also consider a nursing program that qualifies you to be a RN. It takes the same duration to complete as a respiratory therapy program. Everyone knows nursing is always in acute shortage. The opportunities appear to be more vast and variant than respiratory therapy. RNs also get slightly more pay then respiratory therapist.
Ask yourself what you really know about the profession and ask to observe a therapist or RN at work. Then make your choice from there. The schooling will be good investment. Trust me.
Reply:Do the dental. The work is more in demand.
Reply:become a registered nurse.
Reply:I would try for Dental hygiene not Dental assistant. Dental Hygienist make ok money.
Reply:well if i had to choose between the two i wold deff' go with respiratory program, the money is there.it may be more schooling, but it would be so much wreathe it.

Is there a difference between a dental hygenist and a dental assistant?
I can get an associates degree from a community college for a dental assistant, but it looks like I can get a bachelor's from a four year. I'm just trying to do it the quickest and cheapest way, which from the looks of it would be through the community college. Does anyone know where I need to go?
Is there a difference between a dental hygenist and a dental assistant?
Dental assistants help the dentist directly. They get all the equiptment out and hand the dentist what they need when they need it. Assist with root canals, crowns, fillings etc. That being said, a hygenist cleans teeth all day every day. So as for variety, I guess every mouth is different, but assisting is more interesting. I also know that hygenists make about twice as much as an assistant. State laws vary, how much can be done by an assistant. Generally you can be hired and trained on the job to be an assistant, but need schooling for a hygenist.
Reply:yes the assistant. assists the hygienist . that is how they learn.
ask someone at college. your dean .

Fallow your heart, and proceed with your goal. It's your life, not anyone Else's. Unfortunately, you know only negative people in your life. So, be a leader and get out there and do what your heart desires!
Good luck, you can do anything. But not everything will keep you happy, so make your own choice, most important what makes you happy!

Reply:A dental assistant does most of the work and the dentist gets most of the money. If you like that field go all the way and be a dentist.

If you are into it then go for it!
Reply:My mom has done it for almost 20 years. For her it was a great career. She now does front office as well. But its ALOT of standing and bending over. Also you must be ready when the doctor is ready and do things the way he/she wants.
If you get in with a good doctor he/she should treat you right. The pay isnt great but a good doctor will give you plenty of bonuses as well as time off/vacations. Alot of Doctors will even do mini getaways with the office...like a vegas weekend or disneyland stuff like that. You can also work up and someday be a office manager. Its worked well for my mom. Give it a try if you like the feild maybe you can go back to school to be a hygentist? Good luck to you and your career :)

Reply:I worked in the dental field for 16 yrs. There is no reason not to become a dental assistant unless you are not suited to the job. It pays well and you meet a lot of nice people. Maybe you are being steered clear because they feel the demands of the job don't fit your temperament, personality or work habits. So here's what you need. 1. Absolute reliability - always on time or early, pays more attention to tasks than to socializing with the staff. 2. Attention to detail. It's a very technical vocation that requires continuing education throughout your career. 3. Even temper and constant good humor. One of your main jobs is to keep the atmosphere in the operatory low stress and pleasant for the patient and the doc. 4. Caring nature.
So if you feel this is you, go for it. Good luck

If you like to be busy this is the job for you, you will always be busy. Plus its a field thats growing like crazy. YOU WILL NEVER BE WITHOUT A JOB!! I love it, and could never see my self doing anything else...ever!!
Reply:I have been a dental assistant for 10 yrs. There are good things about it and there are bad things, just like with any career. I have been responsible for training or teaching new assistants and interns before, and I always tell them the same thing: Dental assisting is something you either have the knack for, or you don't. I have seen people that really wanted to be a dental assistant, however it was obvious that they just simply weren't cut out for it.
Depending on the office you work in, is what determines what responsibilities you would have and what skill level you would need. I started out in a small, slow paced offfice, where the assistants basically sucked spit, cleaned rooms and took x-rays. Now, I work in an office that is very, very fast paced, I am responsible for all surgeries and implants, ordering supplies, fixing equipment, calling in medications, and being in charge of the doctors schedule. I have to work 90 to nothing all day. I have to be able to know what my doctor needs before he asks for it, I have to be able to know what to do without having to think about it too much, and I have to be able to multi-task very well. I work with 4 other assistants, and I am one of the top 2, so not only do I have to know what I am doing, I have to know what the other assistants are doing and help them when they don't know how to do something. Luckely, this is not a position that most assistants would be expected to do when they are just starting out.
Now days, assistants in most states have to be registered just like a nurse, meaning that you have to take tests in radiology, infection control and jurisprudence (laws), be CPR certified, have a certain number of continueing education credits a year, and maintain your registration every year. Used to, when I first started, you could get on the job training and as long as you were radiology certified, you could work as an assistant, but not anymore. Luckely, the tests were easy for me since I had been in the field for so long, but I saw the looks on the faces of the women who were just starting out and they were obviously very confused. But if you pay attention to the courses you take, study hard, and really dedicate yourself, passing the tests shouldn't be too hard.
Depending on the office where you work, what the dentist you work for does, and the field of dentistry to enter (periodontics, oral surgery, general dentistry), you will have to have a strong stomach at times. Like I mentioned, I handle all the surgeries in my office, so I see some pretty nasty stuff. I was really busy one day, so I had to get one of my co-workers assist on an oral surgery, and she almost passed out. She had to leave the room and I had to stop what I was doing and take over for her. You also need to have great hand-eye coordination, be very multi-tasked, and be able to handle situations on your own. One of the main responsibilities of an assistant is to make temporary crowns and bridges, and you need to be able to handle knowing what to do, even if you are having a difficult time with it. I have gotten really frustrated before, when a temporary isn't coming out like I need it too, but I know that my doctor has more important things to do than to come help me, so I have to figure it out myself.
I would suggest that you try to find an office where you can be an intern. We have had quite a few in my office. That is a great way to see if it is something you want to do. You probaby wouldn't really be allowed to do anything really involved, but you might be allowed to assist on some minor procedures, under the supervision of the dentist or an experienced assistant, and you would be able to see if it is something you are interested in.
Many dentists are very high maintenance and are demanding, so you have to find a place that fits your personality. My dentist can be a real jerk, but I am not known to be a meek, quite, shy person, so I am able to deal with him. I have seen new assistants in my office, get really upset trying to work at his fast pace, or meet his demands, and I either try to help them improve so that they can work better with him, or I mention that perhaps he isn't the doctor for them. You just have to find an office where you fit in well with the doctor and the staff. Myself and our other main assistant work very well together, and that makes both our days go alot smoother.
Good luck in your choice.
BTW: Working in someones mouth everyday, is not as bad as some people would think. After awhile, it just comes second nature. I don't usually even think about it when I see an abcess, a rotten tooth, or a broken tooth anymore.
Reply:If you really want to help people, you should do it. You work very hard and you get little recognition for it. The Dr. usually will not appreciate you as maybe you might expect. Not all Dr's are like that but most are. You might want to get your RDA after you become a dental assistant, they get better pay for the same duties and extra duties. Just think about it and if you really want to be a dental assistant than do it. You are the one that has to be happy at your job. I was a dental assistant and then an RDA, now I do the dental insurance billing for my office and I'm very happy with what I do. I like dentistry and I stayed in this profession. Good Luck.

I am taking Penn Foster online course for Dental Assistant has anyone taking Penn Foster courses?
I am currently working for a dental office and I am interested in becoming a dental assistant but because I have 5 children and a busy life I choose Penn Foster because it allows me to study at my own paste. I am just concerned that it will not be recognized as a accredited program and future employers may not accept it. Please help.
I am taking Penn Foster online course for Dental Assistant has anyone taking Penn Foster courses?
Well bless you for raising 5 kids! I actually, however, wouldn't take any course from an 'online school' such as penn foster or stratford career institute as most employers don't view them as reputable in addition to dental assistants needing a certain amount of clinical, hands-on experience since there is so much manual dexterity (fine motor/hand coordination) and short-term memory skills involved (sometimes the dentist will give oral instructions).
Here is the website for the American Dental Association to try to find accredited programs in your area: www.ada.org and can click 'oral health' then 'careers in dentistry' and then 'dental team careers'. Perhaps you can find a program thru the local community college or county vo-tech school. Wishing you the best of luck!
P.S. I'm not so sure that penn foster is accredited with the american dental association, however, and that may be key in having credibility or marketability as a dental assistant. Perhaps you can ask the dentist that you work for along with contacting other dental offices, and find out if they recognize the program as having a reliable curriculum.
Reply:Thank you all for you great answers I wanted to give everyone a rating but the system only allowed me to comment on one answer, if you are taking the Dental Assistant Course through Penn Foster let me know it would be great to have a study buddy online. Good Luck. Report It
Reply:Well I am taking the Pharmacy Technician course at PennFoster as well. I'm going really well and I'm enjoying it. I don't think it's that easy like people say or think. I'm pretty sure that after you graduate you will have to take the Boards test to be licensed. Generally employers will be happy that you passed the Board, that proves that you learned something, right? Also many employers are kind enough to train and help you once you are starting. I wish you all the success and please don't give up on your course! If you are able to manage your personal life taking this course, by all means finish it!
Reply:I was asking the same question as you till I did some research.....Penn Foster is a accreditied school, and is listed on the U.S. Department of Education Database of Accredited Postsecondary Institutions and Programs, heres the webpage
( http://www.ope.ed.gov/accreditation/Inst... ) Ive already looked it up. Its also accredited by the Middle States Commission on Secondary Schools.
Oh and once you pass Penn fosters exam, you work in a dentist office getting your hands on experience, then you can take the real certification test for your state.
Im going to enroll in dental assistant classes tomorrow.

Can i go to school for dental assistant and work for orthodontics?
I was just wondering, if i went to school for dental assistant, if i'd have to do something extra or different to work in orthodontics? I asked the receptionist at my dentist office, but she was no help. Thanks!
Can i go to school for dental assistant and work for orthodontics?
You don't have to.You don't even have to go to school to be a dental assistant. You can be trained on the job. It's much better to go to school to become certified, but not needed in all states.
So you could also be trained work with braces.
Good luck
Reply:You can go to school, but may be able to get on as a trainee in an ortho office. Write a letter or call the ortho offices near you and maybe someone will take you under their wing and train you. Dental assisting schools can be overpriced for what you get, so be careful. Most only teach general dentistry so you would still need to be trained by an orthodontist. Check into a local college or vocational school it may be less expensive.
Ortho is fun, as an assistant you get to do much more for the patient aside from holding the suction and handing instruments to the dentist.
Reply:Yes, you can go to school to be a dental assistant, and then go on to work at an orthodontist's office if that's where you want to be!
Entry-level dental assisting courses will teach you dental terminology, charting, oral anatomy, suctioning, retraction, radiology, infection control, sterilization techniques... you will learn how to pour models and pass instruments, as well as learn the names for them. There's so much to learn, but the basics will be covered.
Healthcare Provider CPR w/AED is another class you want to take if you don't already have it. You'll need your hepatitis series of shots, as well as your TB.
Some states require certification in Radiation, Health %26amp; Safety in order to take xrays. Some states also require certification in chairside assisting (CDA) or state licensure in order to perform expanded duties. If you go to www.danb.org, you can find your states info.
There's no reason you can't work for an orthodontist if that's what you want to do. Having taken the entry-level course, it'll help you get your foot in the door, then you can learn the legal tasks allowed by orthodontic assistants in your state.
You could always find an ortho office that will allow you to 'shadow' thier assistants, or a general office for that matter... it will give you an idea of what's actually done besides just suctioning and passing instruments....
Best of luck to you!
Reply:My sister never went to school at all and she works in the orthodontics, how ever she's been doing this job for 27 years and she's making 23.00 an hour. This is in the south east MI. area. I do know this same Orthodontist hired a high school girl but they weren't giving her enough days so she quit. She was starting out at 8.50 an hour. So I would do research like you have been. I just thought I would let you know this short story. Good luck.

There are many colleges offer correspondence courses for this. All you need to do is just attend the practical sessions.
But there are other sites likes these also offer complete online courses:
http://www.education-online-search.com/p...
http://www.elearners.com/course/36484.ht...
http://www.worldwidelearn.com/career-tra...
I'm not sure how legit they are. If you know all the theory well, and have a dentist who would respect that and train you, then it's a good option to take online training.

Look in any newspaper or at www.nj.com for classified ads. I'm in SNJ and - trust me - if you speak Spanish and understand dentistry the way I think you do, you would have NO TROUBLE finding a job through conventional means. The only thing negative would be the fact that you are looking for short term employment and most dentists would rather hire for a longer term commitment. If you just want "a job," go to a larger office or clinic and don't tell them about your plans to leave soon. They have large staffs and a high turnover rate anyhow.
Reply:There is a very rare opportunity for you to work as a dental assitant in California, Sacramento, and after that be financed to get the licence to wrok as dentist in CA. To get more information, please call 916-679-7100 Thanks Cyrus Report It
Reply:Contact your state's ADA department. They should have a list of agencies who hire for part time or temp work. This should help you while you are studying. Good luck.

If you just want "a job," go to a larger office or clinic and don't tell them about your plans to leave soon. They have large staffs and a high turnover rate anyhow.

Is anyone out there a medical or dental assistant Could tell me what your day is like?
I am currently taking medical dental assiting classes through PCDI I'm sure you probably have heard it on tv. I will be finished with the course next year around the summer and I was wondering what the typical day is like for a medical or a dental assistant and if the job is enjoyable.
Is anyone out there a medical or dental assistant Could tell me what your day is like?
Well I worked as both a medical and dental assistant~
Medical Assistant:
Depending on which type of Dr you work for..but for me was
Take patients vital signs
Get them in the room ready to be seen by Dr
Set up and break down rooms
Call new prescriptions/refills into pharmacies for patients
My advice don't work for a Dr that will make you do alot of secretarial things
Dental Assistant
Set up rooms for patient based on procedure
Do mouth xrays
Assist dentist with hands on procedures
Do impressions
Clean sanitize rooms and tools
Some charting
I definitly liked medical assisting better..and just make sure you like the Dr or dentist you work for, some can be real mean! Trust me~
Reply:Don't forget to add that a good M.A. draws blood, helps in doing urinalysis checks and does EKG's... Report It

Canadian Intra-oral Level 2 Dental Assistant?
I am intrested in becoming an Intra-Oral Level 2 dental assistant in Canada...I was wondering what the pro's, con's and pay is for this position. Thanks!
Canadian Intra-oral Level 2 Dental Assistant?
You're looking at about $12-14/hr to start. Some places are less, some more, depending on where you are. Check the job bank for listings to get an idea. They also have labour market information.
http://jobbank.gc.ca/Intro_en.aspx
If this is an option for you, you may consider joining the military as a dental technician once you have your level 2. You'll make twice what you would as a civilian ($42,000 to start + possible signing bonus), get at least 3 weeks paid holidays, and most of the time work a steady M-F work week.

What schools in Austin, Tx offer programs for Dental assistant certification?
What schools in Austin (or surrounding communities, ie: Round Rock, Pflugerville) offer programs for dental assistant certification?
Can anyone offer me any information on dental assistant certification in Austin, Tx? I plan to move down, but would like to secure where I'm to attend school. I'm extremely interested in this postion, but dont know where to start. Being new to the area, I was hoping someone could tell me what my options are as far as vocational schools. Id also like to know if financial aid is accepted for this type of education. Any information about this field and this location is very much welcome.

If Chris' answer is not enough just type dental assistant certification in Austin in your search bar it should give more schools that you can shake a stick at.

How much should an Registered dental assistant get paid per hour . I became an RDA recently in California.?
first where do you live? small or large town, will you work for a corporation or group or private practice? general or specialty? in southern calif you could make 12-16 easily but in order to push thru that threshold you will need to stay with that dr. for a while if you are hired at 16 dont expect to make 30-40 in 10-20 years, like wise if you leave a job which you have held for many years, and are being paid above 16 or 20 that reflects your value to that dr. not to a new dr. whom you dont now yet...
Reply:Depends on DA's Qs and patient patronage of the dentist!
Reply:I dont know about California but in KY DA's usually start around 7 per hour and top out around in the 9-10 dollar an hour range. Not nearly enough for what you know and do. A hygeinist however makes over 20 dollars per hour here. If your wanting to really get paid, check on a program and get back in school. You'll be glad you did 1 day and sooner than you think.
Reply:Personally, I don't believe that the certifications that an assistant carries, is what should decide what her salary is. I have seen RDA's and CDA's who are terrible chairside. Book knowledge and actual excellent chairside skills are two totally different things. You can't base a salary on the things that you mentioned. There are just too many variables. Do you have extensive knowledge of implants? How good are you at making temporaries? Could you make 12 units of temporaries in less than an hour and have them look and fit well?
No offense, but taking x-rays, taking impressions, pouring models, sterilization and normal chairside duties, are things that every assistant, whether they have 1 year or 10 years of experience, should know. It is all the "x-tras" that make the difference between a good assistant and a great assistant.
So that said, what are all the x-tra's that you know or can do? Those are what should determine your pay scale, not the normal things that any assistant should know.
But, just to give an actual dollar amount, I would say that you should make no less than $15.00 an hour. Anything above that, really depends on your specific skill level.
Reply:Ok well Im a dental assistant student myself. So u took Infection Control and Jurisprudence exams too. Did u went to school or u didnt? Depends on the paying an hour, this is what i was told, dont matter how many years of experience u have. If u work in general dentistry u will get paid about $10-15 an hour. If u work in the speciality areas like orthodontics, endodontics, prosthodontics, or with the oral surgeons, u are going to get paid even more an hour than general dentistry. Its not hard to look for a job in this field, because they always need dental assistants.
Reply:not sure where you are but up here(western Canada) certified dental assistants start from $16-19 an hour, i started at $17.50 right outta school, but with exp. id say maybe $22... hygienists can get prob $45-60 easy,

State Board Exam for Register Dental Assistant.?
In the state of Texas if I didnt passed the State Board Exam, can I still get a job as a Dental Assistant. I know the only problem is I cant take radiographs x-rays. Please Help because I took my State Board Exam yesterday and Im just stressing out.
State Board Exam for Register Dental Assistant.?
Unless the laws have changed in the past few years, you are allowed to work as an assistant but must pass the board exam within 6 months. I might be wrong but I believe it's either 6 mos or it might be a year. Wasn't that question on the exam? You probably have nothing to worry about (you sound intelligent) and passed the exam. I know it's was a long time ago that I took it and stressed out over it until I made myself sick. I pass it, exceptionally well if I might add. I'm sure you did just as well so relax. Look at it this way, if you did poorly, you can re-study those parts and take it again! Good luck, I'm sure you did fine!
Another way of thinking is, if you did well on all the test during college then you more than likely passed the exam.
Dr Sam may be correct, it's been several years since I've been presented with this question. The last I knew was there were a few states that you didn't need any training to work as an assistant or you could learn "on the job" with a dentist willing to train you. But I believe that was a select few states, all others required you to obtain certification within a certain time frame or the position would be terminated.
Reply:Do you mean to say that Texas REQUIRES you to pass a state board exam to work as a dental assistant? I do NOT know, but I doubt it. You might not be allowed to do certain things, but I am sure you could still work in a dental office and take the exam again later. In NJ, you can train on the job with no school and no experience and no certification. You just can't do as much as a CDA or RDA can. You can also get an x-ray license without the CDA or RDA.

Is it better to do a year in dental assistant class then go in to dental hygiene?
This year I will be appling for the dental assistant course at durham college. I don't want to become the assistant I'm hoping to do a year of this course so I have a better chance to get in to the hygiene program. Do you think this will help my chance to get in, instead of starting in to the hygiene program right out of high school.
Is it better to do a year in dental assistant class then go in to dental hygiene?
Apply for both if you can get directly into the dental hygienist program.
If you don't get in, then go ahead and do the dental assistant class.
What is most important is that you have your pre-req's and good grades...if your dental hygiene program is not lottery based like the nursing programs are, then you'll benifit from a preceptership or internship at a local dentist. Also any extra classes you can apply to it, such as medical terminology or whatever.
But yeah if you are eligible now and have all your pre-reqs...it certainly wouldn't hurt to try.
Reply:my advice - apply to 10 programs and be willing to move to the nearest 1 you get into, especially if you are single and do not have kids, because then there is no excuse. just bite the bullet and do it. and then - get ready to work your tail off. DH school is fiercely competitive, it took me 3 yrs to get in. i don't know why some people claim it is easy to get in. all schools have different specific things they suggest that help you get in. it's very valuable career - but you really have to love it or it's not worth the serious (serious) toll it takes on your body.

Would a salaried registered dental assistant be considered exempt from overtime payment under ca. labor laws?
I believe my wife is being taken advantage of by her employer. She is a registered dental assistant in california. She is supposedly paid a salary. However, she is docked or has to use vacation time for every hour she misses. This would make her non-exempt. However, she is scheduled to work three 8 1/4 hour days and one 4 1/4 day per week. She gets paid no overtime after eight hours.
Her boss says she gets paid a salary, therefore her semi-monthly checks are for 58 total hours worked. Even though some pay periods have extra days in them, she doesn't get paid for them. If she were to miss one of these extra days, however, she would be docked for the hours missed - even if she has already worked the 58 hours that pay period.
I know that what I've written so far would make her a non-exempt salaried employee, because of his pay policies. I would like to find out if the position she holds is normally considered exempt under the professional exemption in the ca. labor laws.

Reply:Talk to the labor board, becouse she can not be exempt as an assistant, unless she makes over $58 per hour.

I am a Canadian Dental assistant looking for a job in the US. How do I find one?
I am a level II dental assistant looking to relocate to the US...Florida specifically. I would appreciate any information on how to go about finding a job...getting a greencard etc. I kinda just want to get the wheels rolling on this but dont know where to start lol All information would be appreciated!
I am a Canadian Dental assistant looking for a job in the US. How do I find one?
My advise would be to find out where there is a demand, and also where you would like to work. if you like flordia, check online, for d.a. positions that are avalible. check out big places first i would say because i believe it would be easier to find a job. try like western dental and etc.
i honestly don't know about obtaining a green card, but if you google it, hopefully you can find some helpful information.
i would also contact the united states and ask where and how and why type of things are needed to apply for a green card and etc.
maybe even a working visa, if that is simplier. i wish i caould be more help as far as that is concearned.
but as far as a dental assiant job, i am sure you will find one. just check job posting web sites, maybe even monster.com which is a job website.
good luck.
hope i helped a little.
Reply:I live in Southern California and just saw about 10 dental assisting jobs listed in the newspaper. If you know someone in Florida, see if they'll send you a local paper. Also, you can google Florida newspapers and look at their websites for jobs. It will just take a little research.
Good luck!

How to become a Dental Assistant in Northwest Indiana?
Depending on your state (I live in PA), you may have to go to a trade school for assisting. I was an assistant in high school. Now, I am a dental hygienist and in my 10 years of working, I think I have come across 1 person who actually went to school. Most dentist (around here at least) hire to train. This way, they hav ethe ability to mold you the way they want you to work and pay less becasue you don't have a degree.

Job Hunting as a dental assistant?
I just graduated from a Dental Assistant training program in CT and am seeking employment in this field. I understand that dentists do not usually advertise for this type of position. So, I am not sure how to go about searching for one of these positions. Are there any suggestions that can help me in this endeavor? I would also gratefully accept any resume suggestions. These would be would be really helpful. I do have DANB Radiology Certificate, even though CT dose not require it, and my instuctor is not from my area and therefor can not be much assistance. Thanks.

With training as an Dental Assistant, what other careers can I go into?
Switching careers paths what other empolyment can I seek with Dental Assistant skills?
With training as an Dental Assistant, what other careers can I go into?
If you are looking to build onto what you already have you could look into Dental Hygienists school. This would give you some additional background that others may not have. Or you could look into dental office management if you have a good background in computers from on the job training and are willing to consider some additional coursework in the business area. What about a radiology technologist? Sine some assistants already work with taking patients x-rays, some additional coursework here could lead to another good opportunity.
Without going back to school, I would see about transitioning into dental lab position or possibly try to get into a medical facility. Dental sales may or may not require you to have a BA/BS in business or another related area.
Good Luck.

Best State for a Dental Assistant to Work?
I'm almost done with my education to become a Dental Assistant and was wondering where the money was at.
Best State for a Dental Assistant to Work?
I agree with Dr. Helen, but I will add that not all states have and/or require Registered Assistants...also, what some states require you have a license for, others may not. Expanded duties differ from state to state as well, so make sure you're within your parameters when you get your first job.
Don't expect the 'big bucks' right out of school, since they need to be earned. This comes from expertise in your field, the advancement in duties, and of course the 'right' boss who will honor and value your accomplishments.
Just because you've graduated from a DA school does not mean you're worthy of making alot of money right out of the gate... you need to prove your worth.
Best of luck to you!
Reply:It's hard to say since most people haven't worked in every state. Stick to a bigger city (Like San Francisco). And BE damn good. If you aren't a great dental asst., you don't command the big bucks. Also, make sure you are a Registered Dental Assistant, get your xray license, coronal polish liscense, and whatever else you can. If you are just a DA, you get paid about half as much. (My RDA's salaries range from 23.75 to 27.00)
Best State for a Dental Assistant to Work?

Anyone work as a Dental Assistant? If so, how do you like it? How much do you make?
Do you get health benefits? I am thinking about finding a job as a Dental Assistant. Do I need a certificate for it? How much do you make?
Anyone work as a Dental Assistant? If so, how do you like it? How much do you make?
I used to be a Dental Assitant and I liked it. I made anywhere from $10-$13 an hour depending on the office. There were some health benefits, but that also depended on the office. You do have to go to school for it and get certified and in some states you need to be licensed as well, you make more money if you are licensed too.
Reply:my girlfriend is a dental assistant and loves it, the hours are great, she works mon-thurs 730-330 and makes around $32k, you do have to go to school for it, you can find the cert. for it at most technical colleges

How much money does a certified dental assistant make?
how much money does a certified dental assistant make?
how long would they make right out of college??
can they make more than $20/ hour?
How much money does a certified dental assistant make?
If a CDA fresh out of college with no experience came to me for an interview and asked for $20/hr, she wouldn't be hired.
Certified/licensed (depends on your state's requirments) assistants do make good money, but it also depends on your location, size of office, how long with employer, etc....and you need to prove your worth to your boss. Just because you say you can do this and you can do that, you need to show you can.
I make an excellent salary............and I earned it with alot of work, continuing ed classes, and years of experience.
Reply:It depends on where you live. Check out salary.com
Reply:I live in Texas and I'm pretty sure most of them don't make more than 20. I know I don't but that's why I'm going back to school to become a dental hygienist. Good luck
Reply:probably around 20 ish
but remember, their salaries will stay that level and wont increase much no matter how long you've been doing the job
Reply:It really depends on two things, where you live, and how long you've been doing the job. Just with a CDA, right out of college would not get $20, or even $15 here in CA. I won't tell you what I make, but it is more than that, but I've been a CDA for 14 years. I also have my CDA and my COMSA. I have also been working at the same office 5+ years. Typically, the more you contribute to the office, the higher the amount you can command. You have to be good at what you do. You also have to enjoy your job. Good Luck!

Has anyone here ever done an Online College for a degree? I am currently at Kent State and going to be doing a Medical Billing Certificate Program in the Summer. But i'd also like to get a dental assistant degree as well. At the college i am currently at they do not offer it.
I also heard that some Dentist Offices just train assistants on the spot?
Thanks in advance

Is anyone a dental assistant out there?
I am interested in this field. I would apprecitate it you could tell me what you do as a dental assistant, and is the pay any good? And does this career involve getting an associtates degree? Thanks in advance.
Is anyone a dental assistant out there?
I started assisting a little over 10 years ago. Back then you only had to have a radiology certificate and be trained in CPR and you could be an assistant. I started out at $7.50 an hour, by the time I was there a year I was making $11.00. I have only been at my current job 3 years and its in a small town, and I only make $15.00 an hour, which is a pay cut from what I was making before this job, but its closer to home and I don't have to fight traffic, so it was worth it for me.
When I started out, I was an assistant to the dental hygientist and I basically took the x-rays, cleaned her rooms and instruments, and helped her do her charting. I moved up to assisting the dentist, but this guy was old fashioned and liked to do everything himself. When I left this job, I found one that would actually let me do the normal things an assistant does. Over the years my skills have improved and I have learned to do more things, and have experience in different fields of dentistry, such as oral surgery, implants, cosmetic, etc.
Normal things that I do as an assistant now, and things you would need to do are:
take x-rays
mount them properly
proper sterilization
knowing names of all instruments and be able to identify them
take impressions
pour up models
make temporary crowns, bridges, and veneers
clean cement on crowns
adjust crowns outside the mouth
adjust dentures and partials
know teeth numbers and charting methods
set up rooms for specific procedures
I have been the implant and surgery assistant in my office for some time now, so I have to handle all the sugerys and I also do the ordering for our office, so my duties go beyond those I mentioned. I wouldn't be concerned with any of that yet though. Like the other lady who answered, I have also been the head assistant in this office, as well as two others that I worked in, so with that comes responsibility that the other assistants don't have.
To be a good assistant you need to be quick. You also need to be able to multi-task. You should be able to read x-rays, though actually diagnosing dental problems and treatment should really be left up to the dentist, though over time any good assistant can do it herself. You should be able to take an x-ray of a tooth and know what it needs to have done on it, but the dentist would actually be the one to present the actual treatment plan to the patient.
I know that in my state, you have to be registered with the state in jurisprudence (Dental laws), infection control, and radiology, as well as having your CPR certification, and have at least 6 hours of continueing ed classes a year.
Reply:I went to school for a year. Some are less than that. The pay varies in where you live, and how much you know. Starting out you dont get that much, but as you get better the pay can be very good. I have been doing it for 5 years now, and I love it. The pay for me now is excellent. It is way more than sucking spit, like everyone says. I am head assistant, and manage the other assistants, and run the whole office. You have to know a lot of stuff ( to be a good assisstant ).
You have to know all the instuments to all the procedure. In general dentistry it varies on what the dentist does. I do Root Canals, Fillings, Crown anad Bridge, dentures, partial, Extractions, Surgical extractions, Tori removal (bone), Alvelorplasty ( shaving jaw bones ), and many many many other things. You have to be ontop of everything. Plus you have to read and diagnois x-rays and be able to see what is the best option for the patient. Plus supply ordering and all sorts of things. When you start oout, you wont know all the stuff. It comes with exsperience like anything wlse. Plus you will not have as many responsibities. The head assistant has the most. It is very demanding, but very rewarding to see the patients confidence restored when they get that pretty smile back.

Good colleges for Dental assistant?
I know alot of people who have gone to the University of Oklahoma for dentistry. I personally believe it is a great school and I have heard only great things about it. Not sure of the tuition, you could start by visiting www.ou.edu and find the link for the health sciences center. :)
