Main difference between a dental Assistant and Hygienist?
The main diffrence between the two are duties and pay. A dental assistant pretty much does everything for the dentist as in prepares everything, before the procedure, help them throughout the procedure, and cleans up everything after the procedure. Also there is such thing as a level 1 and a level 2 dental assistant. A level one isn't allowed inside the mouth, like they can hold the suction and retract the cheek but thats it. While a level 2 can actually clean the patients teech, take impressions and x-rays, among other things. A hygienist, can do soo much more, and can do everything without the dentist being present, alot of the time they will rent the chair from the dentist and work at many diffrent office, you can pretty much make your on scheduel. They are also allowed to go below the gum linne. If you are considering between the 2 I would suggest the Hygienist, I spent 1 year in school for an assistant and, whish i would have just spent the extra year to become a hygienist, they pay is hugely diffrent. Hygienists in most states can give injections and clean below the gum level. They actually produce revenue for a dental practice as their services are charged out.

The cost for school is also very different. My assisting school was 14k and my hygiene school is 60k. Hygienists have and always will get payed way more than assistants, but assistant pay isn't all that bad if you're good at it.

Hygienists get paid more because typically they go do school longer and they learn more things. There are schools where you can learn dental assistant tasks, but most training is on the job. Depending on what type of office you go to.

Hygienists do a lot more than dental assistants are permitted to do. Generally this varies from state to state. Dental assistants with an EFDA certification can do more than just regular dental assistants. And dental hygienists with an efda certification can do more than the regular dental hygienists. ONLY THE DENTIST IS ALLOWED TO ADMINISTER ANESTHETICS!

Usually dental assistants assist the dentist with procedures they do, they suction, and pass instruments. they can also take impressions and they clean the area when the patient is done. The ones with the EFDA certification are allowed to do a lot more. Hygienists usually just do cleanings, (polishing the teeth, checking gums, scaling the teeth, adminstering flouride.) the ones with the efda certification can place fillings, and sealants.

Anyone in the office can get their radiology license, which is just so you can push the x-ray button. even people who arent certified dental assistants or registered dental hygienists.

There are 2 year and 4 year programs for dental hygiene. Usually it is recommended to do the 4 year program because you never know what will happen to your hands and if you took the 4 year program you can become a product rep for companies, like crest and colgate. you can also become a teacher. and if they ever have too many dental assistants they will require people to go for the 4 year one. you do the same amount of clinical hours, but the reward is much greater. you would also get paid more because you have a higher degree.

As for the pay, on average (depending on the area) dental hygiensts can earn an UPWARDS of 30 dollars an hour. dental assistants can earn anywhere between 8-20 dollars an hour, of course thats average, so many places could be more.

In about forty states now dental hygienists are allowed to administer local anesth. I am licensed to admin. infiltration anesth. only, however in many states such as Louisiana, hygienists are allowed to give block injections. Just FYI.

They are two entirely different occupations. They just both happen to be in the dental profession.

Dental hygiene is a two year program (exactly like nursing school). There, they take didactic and clinical courses. They taken board exams and licensing exams in order to practice. They have to hold a license to practice, just like nurses and like doctors (dentists, physicians, podiatrists, optometrists, etc. etc.).

Dental assistants, however, can be formally trained or they can be bumbs taken off the street who (hopefully) learn on the job. Dental assisting programs run several months, mostly hands-on. There's very little didactic training, if any.

Obviously, dental assistants are more important to a dental practice than are hygienists. A doctor cannot work without his assistants. We can work just fine without hygienists (although it's worthwhile for us to have hygienists working under us).

Nonetheless, hygienists--unlike assistants--are able to perform deep cleanings on patients. In some states, they can even administer local anesthetic (which I think is an absolutely terrible idea for a number of reasons, despite the added convenience it affords us docs).

Basically, hygienists are health care providers. Assistants are not.

As such, a hygienist is going to be paid a lot more. They can make as much as $50 to $70k per year. Assistants are lucky if they reach $30 in most states.

Assistants, depending on the location and their training, start around $10 to $15 per hour. Hygienists are easily twice that much.

Dental assistants should NEVER be in the room while exposing x-rays. If a child needs to be held, the parent should be employed with that. X-ray technologists do get some very mininal exposure, due to being in the room while the x-rays are on (ie, barium swallows, upper GIs, barium enemas, hysterosalpingograms, etc).

Usually a Dental Assistant would not get irradiated. Even if they were present while a patient was having their x-rays taken, the assistant would wear a lead apron (which x-rays can't get through) or stand behind a screen which would protect them from the radiation while the x-ray was done. Dentists and dental assistants (and other people who work with x-rays) have to wear a badge that is sensitive to x-rays. This is checked regularly (not sure how often) to ensure they are not being exposed to x-rays.
Reply:Anybody working with radiation should be wearing a film monitor badge.

As you know the effevts of radiation exposure are cumulative, so looking at your readings over the years you should be able to ascertain your level.

Remembering the simple things like leaving the room during the exposure all ad up to decreasing your exposure.

Well im starting a cource in April its a 20 hour program once a week for about 4 months. When im finished with the cource they will give a certificate that shows all of what I learned. Now will i be able to get a job in an office or will I always get declined since I dont have any office experiance?

You will get paid more if you get your RDA or CDA. You will probably be able to get a job, but if anyone else applies w/more licenses they will choose them over you in most cases. Starting pay really depends on where you live, state, city. What you wear is up to the office. Some have a required color/uniform, others let you choose. Good Luck!

It varies with experience, the practice and the dr you work for. Coming right out of school you should expect to make aprox. $12-14 an hour. The max I've heard of a DA making is $24/hour and she had about ten years experience. If you work for a specialist you will make alot more money. I was working for an endodontist, I had five years experience and I was making $18/hour. It just depends on the Dr. I had a friend that worked at the same office with me and she had 1 year of exp, she was making $16/hour. Like I said it depends on the Dr and the office, he obviously didn't pay much attention to the market pay. Look up the Workforce Bureau of Statistics for your state and it will give you an average.

I don't recommend it, because I have a weak stomach as well. What you could try is an orthodontic assistant, that helps put braces on kids. I have braces, and I enjoy the lively moms, and cheery bright colors of the orthodontist's office, and you wouldn't have to worry about blood, or anything like that. Just putting colorful rubber bands, and wires with glue in kids' mouths. :)

No. Any kind of patient work you have to have proper schooling and a license to prove it. There are costly lawsuits involved in the medical field and companies are held liable for mistakes. They definitely don't want to take the risk of hiring someone with no background.

just a quick note...Pay varies greatly depending on state and duties. In my state, we have expanded-duties assistants which can make between $15-20. These assistants can place fillings take intial impressions, radiographs etc. The non-expanded make between $10-15 per hour

Reply:I am not putting down anyone elses answers, but it is not a simple cut-dry answer. As a new assistant in the field 10 yrs ago I started out making $7.50 hr. Low by todays standards, but in our office hiring a new, untrained assistant (that is no offence to you but once you are in the field for a while you will see that there are certain things that you can not learn in dental assisting school, and can only come with experience: making temps, working up treatment plans, repairing dentures, etc.) will only start out at about $8.50-9.00 hr. I work in Texas, and by my own opinions am severely underpaid. I am fully expanded, coordinate all sugeries and implants, order supplies, and can do anything that my dentist asks me to and I only make $15.00 hr. I am friends with the owner of the local dental assisting school and she always tells her students to get the notion out of their heads that they are going to start out making "the big bucks" cause if they think that, then they are going to be disappointed. Many have called her back, after they graduated and got offered a job, upset that they were not offered a large salary. You can not expect to get the "big bucks" with only school training or possibly with intern experience. I have seen assistants with more experience than me, who dont know how to do near as much as I can. That is not in anyway bragging, it is what I have experienced. A fully expanded, highly paid assistant, would be able to do absolutely anything #1 that they could by law and #2 without much, if any assistance by the doctor or another assistant. For example: If you worked for a dentist and he did a 8 unit bridge on #5-12, would you be able to make an excellent looking and fitting temporary on that, and take no more than 1 hour to do so? That is something that an experienced assistant could do, no questions asked. So there is no right or wrong answer to your question. There are too many factors that affect the answer: the individual dentist, location, experience level, work quality, etc.

In my rurual area, they tend to start at $7 - 9/hour.

But a 20 minute drive can have you starting out at $12.00/hr.

All of these are off the street, no experience.

A friend in Charlotte NC says assistants start at $17 and go up and up depending on experience. In NC assistants have to be certified. They don't in my state.

Dental assisting is a great job. It's very rewarding, and depending on what doctor you work for can be the best job ever. My dentist always worked w/ our schedule and never gave us a hard time.

Dental assistants work in a well-lighted, clean environment. Their work area usually is near the dental chair so that they can arrange instruments, materials, and medication and hand them to the dentist when needed. Dental assistants must wear gloves, masks, eyewear, and protective clothing to protect themselves and their patients from infectious diseases. Assistants also follow safety procedures to minimize the risks associated with the use of x-ray machines.

About half of dental assistants have a 35- to 40-hour workweek, which may include work on Saturdays or evenings.

Most assistants learn their skills on the job, although an increasing number are trained in dental-assisting programs offered by community and junior colleges, trade schools, technical institutes, or the Armed Forces. Assistants must be a second pair of hands for a dentist; therefore, dentists look for people who are reliable, work well with others, and have good manual dexterity. High school students interested in a career as a dental assistant should take courses in biology, chemistry, health, and office practices.

The Commission on Dental Accreditation within the American Dental Association (ADA) approved 265 dental-assisting training programs in 2005. Programs include classroom, laboratory, and preclinical instruction in dental-assisting skills and related theory. In addition, students gain practical experience in dental schools, clinics, or dental offices. Most programs take 1 year or less to complete and lead to a certificate or diploma. Two-year programs offered in community and junior colleges lead to an associate degree. All programs require a high school diploma or its equivalent, and some require science or computer-related courses for admission. A number of private vocational schools offer 4-month to 6-month courses in dental assisting, but the Commission on Dental Accreditation does not accredit these programs.

Most States regulate the duties that dental assistants are allowed to perform through licensure or registration. Licensure or registration may require passing a written or practical examination. States offering licensure or registration have a variety of schools offering courses—approximately 10 to 12 months in length—that meet their State’s requirements. Other States require dental assistants to complete State-approved education courses of 4 to 12 hours in length. Some States offer registration of other dental assisting credentials with little or no education required. Some States require continuing education to maintain licensure or registration. A few States allow dental assistants to perform any function delegated to them by the dentist.

Individual States have adopted different standards for dental assistants who perform certain advanced duties, such as radiological procedures. Completion of the Radiation Health and Safety examination offered by the Dental Assisting National Board (DANB) meets those standards in more than 30 States. Some States require completion of a State-approved course in radiology as well.

Certification is available through DANB and is recognized or required in more than 30 States. Other organizations offer registration, most often at the State level. Certification is an acknowledgment of an assistant’s qualifications and professional competence and may be an asset when one is seeking employment. Candidates may qualify to take the DANB certification examination by graduating from an ADA-accredited dental assisting education program or by having 2 years of full-time, or 4 years of part-time, experience as a dental assistant. In addition, applicants must have current certification in cardiopulmonary resuscitation. For annual recertification, individuals must earn continuing education credits.

Without further education, advancement opportunities are limited. Some dental assistants become office managers, dental-assisting instructors, or dental product sales representatives. Others go back to school to become dental hygienists. For many, this entry-level occupation provides basic training and experience and serves as a steppingstone to more highly skilled and higher paying jobs.

Population growth and greater retention of natural teeth by middle-aged and older people will fuel demand for dental services. Older dentists, who have been less likely to employ assistants, are leaving the occupation and will be replaced by recent graduates, who are more likely to use one or even two assistants. Dental Assistant training is different for each state. It is best to look for your states medical board and click on Dentistry. The pay depends on the state in states that do not require a certification or specialized training ie an Associates Degree, the pay is significantly less. My friend is a DA and made 22.00 p/h in NC, but now in GA only makes 14.00 p/h ( and she has 10 years of experience). Hope this helps.

Reply:The hygienist scales, polishes, and cleans the teeth. Not every office had a hygienist and yes they do make more money but it's harder to find work. The assistant charts, passes instruments, takes x-rays, selective polishing, impressions, pours up models (some offices), can pack amalgams, runs the desk, and much more. They generally take x-rays, assist the dentist with proper instruments and suctioning, do impressions (with that clay-like substance) of teeth, and clean and sanitize equipment. I'm sure that the person needs to have a good short-term memory for when the dentist gives verbal instructions and great manual dexterity.

Please do Not enroll in one of those 'online schools' such as penn foster or stratford career institute as they are not considered reputable places of learning. Perhaps you can check into the local county vo-tech schools or community college. Good luck to you!

As far as I know, dental assistant licenses are state-by-state only. I'm in NJ, for instance, and a PA license is meaningless in NJ and vice versa. This does not mean that you can not get a JOB in the other state, but just that you are not certified to do expanded functions or whatever until you qualify in the new state.

Reply:Elementary teacher you have to deal with children. If you can handle that then it's perfect for you. Just remember sometimes children aren't that bright so don't be harsh about it. Dental assistant. You assist the Dentist which assists the people with their tooth problems. Either way your helping the world. By teaching the children of the future or helping people with tooth conditions. Being a dental assistant may take a longer time though and get more pay. Ask yourself which one seems more worth it to you.
Reply:I don't know about dental assistant, but I can tell you about teaching. Unless you've been in a school situation prior to this (not just as a student), it may not be the job you expect. Much of it is not so much about teaching the kids as it is trying to get them to behave, trying to appease parents, trying to figure out how to fit in all the teaching and preparing you need to do when there are excessive demands made on your time (like having to test kids one-on-one repeatedly throughout the year which takes alot of actual teaching time away), and also being expected to turn in data and participate in staff events/trainings when you'd really rather use the time to get your classroom stuff done.

On the upside, you will really become attached to the kids (even the ones with behavior issues) and they will become attached to you. If you work with a good team, you'll develop a great comraderie with them and have someone to turn to when you're struggling with lesson ideas or need suggestions for dealing with behavior.

You also get a ton of holiday and vacation time, but this means (depending on what state you live in %26amp; how much they pay) you may not like the annual salary considering you are paid for only 3/4 of a year because that's what you actually work . I have friends who complain about teacher salaries being too low, but when you only work 3/4 of a year, its normal to expect you'd make 1/4 less than the average person who works all year. You probably will take alot of work home with you during the school year (especially the first couple years when you are just getting established - after that its easier), but you can afford to be completely work-free in the summer and on winter break, fall break, spring break, etc.

Some of the pros and cons of teaching vary with the area you live in too. Low-income/poverty areas mean lots of behavior problems but also lots of kids who really need a caring parent-figure in their lives (thus making the challenges more "worth it" because you can provide that love and care that they don't get at home). High income areas have less behavior issues but you'll probably have alot of parents breathing down your neck making sure their kids are getting enough attention from you and staying ahead of the learning curve.

If you have any kind of four-year degree right now, you will probably already qualify to be a substitute teacher (depending on your state regulations - but even if you don't, I've known some districts to take people without degrees becuase they are in need of subs so badly - check around!), so you might want to try that for awhile in different schools and areas just to see what its like. And what you like/dislike about the experience. This is also a good opportunity to ask other teachers how they feel about teaching.

I'm not sure what your draw is to teaching, but have you ever considered a library science degree? Librarians are in high demand, make very good money, and if you choose to, you could work in a school library so you get a bit of the teaching side too. Just an idea, as its something I think would be a fun job if you like that environment.

I don't know what the pay rate is for your field, but I live in Columbia (about two and a half hours away) and I can tell you that you should definitely check out the cost of living before you settle for a salary! It's a tourist town, and EVERYTHING is sooooooo expensive there! "Rent" on a place to stay is crazy, and buying a place, you have to compete with the "tourists" that want a vacation home--

Just a suggestion! I love to go visit there in the summer for a week, but it would drive me insane to live there during tourist season!

Apply for scholarships at the community college.
Reply:Call or email the dental hygiene school in your area and find out their requirements for applying. You will need some basic college credits, but how many will be determined by what type of program you enter. Grade point is very important as well as ACT score. The hygiene program in my state requires 3.6 GPA and 21 ACT score. Community service work is also a bonus for your resume. You already have the dental experience. Check into Pell Grants if your income level is low and other grants that are available in your state. Your college advisors will usually know possible grants available, so give them a call. Its not a quick fix answer I know. Look for a 2 year program possibly at a Technical School if you have one in your area.

If you live in a rural area and you've worked for your dentist awhile see if he/she would sponsor you to go to Hygiene School and you could then have a contract to work for him when you are finished...just an idea.

Some schools are starting online classes for hygiene. Not sure if yours does, but that would allow you to be able to work and get some classes out of the way too.
Reply:I am currently a Dental Hygiene student in my senior year. It is a very expensive program to get into. Not only do you have to pay for tuition but you have to buy your own instruments and often rent equipment. I would try to get into a 2 year school rather than a 4 year, it will cut down on 2 years of tuition payments. Apply for FASFA and any scholarships that the college might provide. I would also recommend taking out a loan. Dental Hygiene curriculum is very VERY time consuming. Also search the internet for academic scholarships- it may only be for $100 but it will at least buy you a book.

Also, try buying used books and supplies from graduating seniors. Good Luck! It's worth it.
Reply:Contact your local Unemployment office(yes unemployment office) and request information about the WIA program. The WIA progam provides one-time grants up to $4000 to people to get job training/education/skills. You don't have to be unemployed. (I am a Social Worker)

you have to really want to do it. It's a lot to remember, but it's well worth it. When I took the course, it wasn't hard at all. But now the dental board requires you to have xray, coronal polishing, and pass the test to become a registered dental assistant. go for it!
Reply:I am an instructor for a dental assisting school. The course is fast paced and we go over a lot of information, a good portion of the training is hands on. That said, if you are serious about doing well, and use the study tools and books given in the course, you will keep up and learn all that you need to get your certification. This gives you the basics to enter the field. I say go for it. Usually the students are overwhelmed the first few classes, then start "getting it". It's rewarding.

The basic answer to your question is "No", the acrylic and monomer is not a harmful agent when properly handled. The acrylic powder poses no potential harm what so ever when in contact with bare skin. The monomer on the other hand could pose a minor risk as it could absorb into the tissue if mishandled, such as pouring the monomer liquid directly into your hand...There are greater risk for your unborn child when you take dental x-rays or mix silver amalgam filing material containing Mercury. When Acrylic powder and the liquid Monomer are properly mixed in the mixing jar and not handled until the material is properly set, kneading the material prior to packing should pose no health risk to you or your baby.

You dont even need to go to school to be a D.A. You need to take an x-ray class to take x-rays though. I Know alot of people who just walked in got hired and trained. Its not had to be a dental assistant. And dentist know students fresh out of school dont really know squat anyways. Its easy to learn and you get better with expeirence. You can even get registered if you have a D.D.S verify you have dental expeirence work to take the test. Many people dont knwo that
Reply:FIRST thing you must check is if the school you plan to attend is accredited with your states educational association. If the school is not accredited, you might as well get your training from a cracker jack box, as far as any employer will be concerned.

Technical colleges are awesome for the Dental Assistant program, and usually you are working within the first 2-3 months of the program. AND most dental assistant programs only require about 2800-3000 hours of school, then you will graduate with your certificate or degree. So yes, 3000 hours is sufficient.....(I took the DA program at a tech college....love it)

But please make sure your school is ACCREDITED or your training isn't worth the paper it is written on...good luck

make sure you understand the difference between the two, an assistant just hands tool to the dentist, you can typically be trained in an office without prior experience or education, and typical pay is $15/ hour or so, not bad, but not going to make you rich either.

A Hygenist actually cleans your teeth, it is nearly impossible to get into school for it, and when you do it is extremely difficult and demanding (takes about 2 years, but you are in class all day and doing homework all evening). The pay reflects it though and typical starting salaries can easily be $80k / year (about $40/hour)

I'd say both are good jobs, and both are in demand, only you can decide if you will enjoy it or think it is boring.

Reply:I would consider it more disgusting than boring. If you want to achieve anything, however, you're going to have to undergo levels of tedium and other unpleasant factors. Switching jobs is only a good idea if you want to pursue something else, not because the place that you are at in life is "boring."

I personally recommend "Choke" by: Chuck Palahniuk. He's also the author of "Fight Club" and many other really good books.

She can be pretty nice but very jealous and does not know anything about dentistry and is only there because he wants her there. She's very controlling and sometimes hard to get along with. She has the ability to snap at you one minute and the next she's nice to you. The dr. is great to work with and it's his wife that drives us all nuts. The other girls agree as well.

I worked in a dental office where the wife was there as an assistant very jealous but sometimes nice. The only thing you can do is get with the other girls and confront the doctor this is his business plus he is male so he probably doesn't even know whats going on. Don't say anything bad about the wife because he will take her side, just say that there is tension at work maybe all of you can work something out. Be prepared to look for another job just in case. good luck. I made it 10 months at that office before I quit.

Getting rid of her can be hard if the husband wants her there. He probably has a problem with her too and maybe someone in the office can help out. Maybe you'll have to hire a guy and try the control thing.

I don't know if being a dental assistant increases one's chances of being accepted into Dental school but it seems like it would be a waste of your time and money. Go for the real thing.

Overall, seems like dental schools don't place a lot of emphasis on prior experience in the field of dental health. Some schools may wish to see a letter of recommendation from a dentist or other healthcare professional as one of the 3 letters required. One school actually gives more consideration to those who wish to change careers and go into dentistry.

I suggest you look at websites for dental schools in your state or wherever you might want to go, and examine the admissions requirements very carefully. Things like high DAT scores are more important than having been a dental assistant. Most schools want to see a well rounded college education with a decent GPA.

Reply:I don't really think that it will increase your chances for admission but the experience will help you better understand what you will learn in school. I would start with being a dental assistant to make sure that you want to become a dentist. At least then if you decide that you are really not that interested in the profession then you have not wasted too much money. I have been a dental assistant for 6 years and I love it but it is not a job for just anybody. Good Luck on whatever you decide to do with your life.

If you are unsure if dentistry is where you want to be, then it's okay to start out as a dental assistant, I guess, but to tell you the truth, you could spend a little more time in school to be a dental hygienist and go on to dental school from there. The pay is better and you just have more autonomy and responsibility.

I am in texas and i can only do pit and fissure in areas that are low income. I make $18 an hour but i do ortho as well. good luck and it is an awsome job if you like to help people change there minds about going to the dentist and education them on good oral home care.

From what I have learned, some dentists would rather have a hygienist right out of school that they can train themselves as opposed to getting an assistant that has worked for several years and then try to transfer over.

I am actually looking into the dental hygienist certification and have interviewed with a couple of dental offices that told me they would rather have the hygienists because they are more likely to stay after being trained. An assistant in the hygienists program will not have as flexible of a schedule while they are in school and are more likely to leave once they have completed their education.

In my area:

Dental Assistants earn- $12-16 per hr

Dental Hygienists earn- $ 30-35 per hr
Reply:I know a friend who is a dental assistant. She only has GED (no college ed) and got lucky with the job. She has been working with the same dentist for more than 10 years and makes $13 an hour. You have to stand for long hours and deal with patients who are not polite.
Reply:You don't need both certificates. Dental assistant is less pay and quicker to get certificate without taking pre-requisite courses. Dental hygienist school takes 2 years after you take a year of the pre-requisites like anatomy, you need good grades to be accepted. I am a dental hygienist in the state of Mississippi. You do not have to have a degree to be a dental assistant. Some people choose to obtain a degree, but I don't know what classes they take. I really, really enjoy my career as a dental hygienist. I had to take basic stuff like oral communications, english comp, art appreciation etc. I had to take several sciences A%26amp;P I and II and Organic chemistry I and II. Those were the most difficult. I had to take absolutely no math courses. Those are the prerequisite courses. After being accepted into the program I had two whole years, summer included, of dental hygiene courses. The pay is great. I make 200.00/day at one job and 150.00/day at another.

I think it's the same thing. It just depends on where you live. I'm a CDA and think of RDAs as being the same thing. Both have to take board exams to get their credentials. Both have the same knowledge and skills...I think it's just called something different in some places.

It's a great paying job!

As far as the 'contract', I've never heard of that...

Like any other job, though, you need to earn your pay increases by attending continuing education classes, mandated infection control, OSHA, get certified and/or licensed and keep your Healthcare Provider CPR current.

You can't just walk into an office and expect to make the 'big bucks' right away......

Once you're settled into assisting chairside, it's a good idea to learn the 'front desk' as well... then you'll be considered 'cross-trained' and are able to handle both tasks... and you'll be more valuable to your employer.

If you live in a state that allows expanded duties, even better...

I guess I don't understand the question. What state are you in? I'm a Certified Dental Assistant, but I don't yet have my expanded functions license. Here, and in most states, you can be registered (meaning you can only practice in that particular state), certified by DANB (meaning you can practice in any state) and/or have expanded functions training. Each state has their own laws regarding what an assistant can or can not do. However, I've never heard of a "level 2" dental assistant.

Pretty much all states you are not supposed to take radiographs w/out taking a radiograph assisting licensing exam. However, many dentists will tell you to go ahead and do some to better understand the test.

To succeed, you must project a professional, competent and enthusiastic image. Your aim is to convince the interviewer that you would be an asset to the company. Keep the following in mind:

Be punctual.

Do whatever it takes to arrive a few minutes early. If necessary, drive to the company the night before and time yourself. Allow extra time for traffic, parking and slow elevators.

Dress right.

Your clothing should be appropriate for the position you're seeking. Attire must fit well within the office and be immaculate. If you don't know what the typical attire at the company is, call and ask! Shoes should be polished; pants/skirts and shirts pressed.

Shake well.

It is not a very hard field. I would go for it. They receive an annual salary of 24,000-28,000 dollars. I would say go for it and dont worry about the salary. If its something that you enjoy then dont think about anything else. Just go for it. Hope that helps.

I have my EFDA %26amp; My RDA and lets just say in college I had really good grades and I think it was harder then the x-ray exam. You'll for sure want to study your *** off. Get any kind of book that they are recommending for your state I'm in Pa and I took mine a good while ago but I can remember thinking thank god I studied so much. Reply:no i would highly recommend against it. most dentists i have worked for have severe mental issues. one would cry and tell us she hated her job. another would throw things. instruments whatever was around.

not all dentists are bad but you are extremely lucky to find one without any issues. i would recommend being a dental hygienist. you work alone for the most part. you only work 3 days a week and you make more than an assistant. if you take a test to become registered you will make better money that a dental assistant. my aunt told me to quit da school to become a hygienist and i so should have listened to her.

if you want to see what being an assistant is like most dentists will allow you to volunteer. try this before going to da school.

I brush my teeth regurlarly however, I have some mornings where I have real bad morning breathe. What can I do about it? I live in an apartment complex, and my neighbors across the hall smoke grass, and I don't but some mornings I wake up with a taste of nasty like I smoked grass with them. I use mouthwash,and the prewash mouthwash, but the taste never goes away. Any suggestions?

Swish/gargle w/ hydrogen peroxide. It will kill off some of that bacteria causing the bad breath and bubble into crevices and places that are hard to clean (like tonsils if you have them). Tonsils and the very back of the tongue often hold bacteria that cause bad breath and are very hard to clean.

Reply:It could the result of a poor diet or a deficiency in calcium. Get a check up with the dentist and ensure that you floss as it is just as important as brushing. If you are really bothered by the people that smoke grass across the hall, have you tried reporting them? You could remain inconspicuous if you tell the feds you want your name unmentioned. Just try adjusting your diet, maybe you're consuming too much junk food. Fruits and vegies are a good way to boost your diet, meats, though essential, consist of hundreds of bacteria which may cause bad breath. Its why dogs have bad breath too, they are mostly carnivors.

Dental assistant has a higher hourly wage...yet, according to the bureau of labor and statistics, many dental assistants work part time or hold jobs at two different clinics. PT aides (not to be confused with PT assistants) can also be on the job trained...yet their salary tends to be much lower...usually in the $9-10 an hour range. There generally are not as many oppotunities for PT aides as their are dental assistants.

The following is from a website which has questions answered by qualified medical personnel who are experts in radiation and it's effects. Here is what I found:

"QUESTION: I work in a dental office as a dental assistant and I'm pregnant. I am concerned about radiation and I would like to know how much radiation each dental x ray carries and the amount of radiation that affects the baby. I try to stay far from the x-ray source but I'm concerned about scatter x rays; how far do I have to stay from the x-ray source? Also, do you think a lead apron with 0.3 mm thickness is sufficient to protect my baby from radiation?

ANSWER: Your concern about your radiation exposure during pregnancy is appropriate and appreciated. However, there is little cause for worry. Dental workers are very unlikely to receive much of a measurable occupational dose. There is an occupational dose limit (50 mSv per year—mSv is millisievert and is a unit of radiation dose) but I can share that at my organization, we have not had a dental assistant receive even 1/100th of that (0.5 mSv) and we do many hundreds of dental x rays each year. Most of our dental workers, in fact, receive no measurable radiation exposure on the job.

There are a couple of reasons for this. First, the beam of radiation is coned to the exact spot that needs to be x rayed. So the only thing in the primary x-ray beam is the tooth or teeth of interest. Second, the fact that the beam is so coned down results in very little scatter radiation. Reply:You will be fine. as long as you are not in the room when the x ray is being taken. The light for curing is only and ultra violet rays light. no damages to the fetus. We get as little radiation as if we were using the microwave. If you are still worried, ask your ob and talk to your boss. There are places online and at the dental health professionals web sites.

You can take the exam for either certified or registered since you have worked in the field so long. Look up medical dental assisting professional organizations. American Medical Technologists is one but I don't believe they do dental. Good luck.

As a dental hygienist and former dental assistant I can say I really enjoyed both! With assisting I got to use a wide variety of skills during my day. Whether it was surgical assisting, taking impressions, working with the Dr on bridges or extractions it made the day fly by. You may consider the fact that when the Dr works you usually work as well, perhaps even down to you taking your vacation because he/she is taking theirs. Also, you may only get to know the patients on a brief basis. With hygiene you may get to know your patient's really well. I have one patient that has followed me from my 1st job to my current job, spanning 15 years. Hygiene can be monotonous at times, but you can count on seeing patients every 45 minute (+ or -) and you might consider that better than every 15 minutes, though some Dr's appointments can last for hours. Hygiene definately pays much better and I find the hours flexible based on my needs. I have a phenomenal boss and work with 7 other hygienists who are great! Hygiene school can be very competitive to get into, while dental assistants may have schooling or train on the job. So, if you have any other questions feel free to email and good luck!

Many programs are one semester long and can be completed part time. On the job training is also an option but you may have to take a certification exam for x-rays. You will still have to take the exam even if you opt for formal training. A community colleg or technical school may have the program.

The main diffrence between the two are duties and pay. A dental assistant pretty much does everything for the dentist as in prepares everything, before the procedure, help them throughout the procedure, and cleans up everything after the procedure. Also there is such thing as a level 1 and a level 2 dental assistant. A level one isn't allowed inside the mouth, like they can hold the suction and retract the cheek but thats it. While a level 2 can actually clean the patients teech, take impressions and x-rays, among other things. A hygienist, can do soo much more, and can do everything without the dentist being present, alot of the time they will rent the chair from the dentist and work at many diffrent office, you can pretty much make your on scheduel. They are also allowed to go below the gum linne. If you are considering between the 2 I would suggest the Hygienist, I spent 1 year in school for an assistant and, whish i would have just spent the extra year to become a hygienist, they pay is hugely diffrent. Dental hygienists have more responsibility, but more freedom. Advantages: 2 to 3 times the pay of dental assistants, set own hours. Disadvantages: way longer and more costly schooling.

Dental assistants work under supervision of dentists. They make the patients comfortable and help the dentist with procedures. Advantages: flexible hours, good benefits, little or no certification needed. Disadvantages: limited room for advancement, lower pay. (A very well qualified assistant in a specialty office can make good money, but never as much as a hygienist.)

No. It's an honest paycheck, but its just that, a paycheck. You might consider a career something making 25k per year for life, but I personally don't. Do a Bachelors in Healthcare Management or something that requires a Bachelors of science. Don't take the easy way out unless you don't care too much about income growth. Diplomas and Associates degrees are simply not enough for todays job market. This advice is what you paid for it, but it's just like grandma gives. Best of luck.

Phlebotomists are not paid very well, Dental Assistants are paid a little better, but Medical Coding can be a more fruitful position, depending on the size of your city. Look here for more salary info that's based on median incomes of those jobs in your area.

Only women can be dental assistants, because most dentists in private practice work independently, and the main purpose of a dental assistant is to be a chaperon in the presence of female customers.

Basically, a dental assistant has to keep the place clean between patients, function as a secretary, help to handle the suction tube during procedures and prepare the equipment and materials that the dentist needs for each procedure.

This profession is best for females who are pleasant looking, able to communicate fluently bilingually, and have a pleasant personality. The key is that you should have qualities that will make a customer feel at ease and served like a king.

I think its a great job for pretty gals who are looking for an easy job and a pay range of around $1500.

I am currently in school to become a Dental Lab Tech but I am still not sure if that's what I want to do. I am going back and forth between that and Dental Assisting. I am trying to found out everything I can about both before I make my decision (wages, schooling, etc..)

If you go to www.danb.org, you can find out what requirements are necessary in your state to be a dental assistant... some states mandate that you have a license, or have your certification, while others do not.

Entry-level salary in my area is $10-$14/hr, while licensed assistants can earn twice that much and more.....with additional independent responsibilities.

Reply:You should ask yourself what would make you happier. Would it be working directly with people to help them with their dental needs--dental assisting, or working with tools and dental materials, but not directly with people--dental lab tech. Dental assisting requires some schooling in most states, unless you do very basic tasks that only require on the job training. Dental lab tech skills would make you a much more valuble dental assistant, but you also need great people skills to be a good dental assistant.
Reply:It depends on where you live. Some states only require on the job training and then a test to be registered.

Call your dental office and ask the assistants there. Also ask if you can come for a couple of hours and follow the assistants around and get a feel of the job. All offices are different but you can get an idea of what the job entails...

You might even like a hygienist job. That requires at least 2 years of college and then hygiene school , but they make the big bucks... LOL!!!

dental offices typically work a 4 day work week. my husband in order to get custody of the children, set me up with drugs. therefore, dismissing his 4 domestic violence charges against him, (stating i was no longer a creditable witness) and receiving custody of my babies ages 3 and 23 months. we settled the case in mediation, the guardian ad litem was recommending he get custody because of my arrest. i now have to take weekly drug test, pay for a supervising service to supervise my 3 hour weekly visitation with my children, drug counseling 2 x month for at least the next 3 years and pay him $970.00 child support a month!! i only made $16.00 hr (32 hr/wk) and she told me in mediation that "i didnt need just one job, i needed a part time job for fri and sat". I am a professional, Why should i have to work two jobs just to pay more child support? he lives with mom, no bills, and is a pipe foreman making $20/hr. Why? When i was the one abused %26amp; hes the one on meth? im in Cobb Co. Ga.

Also some Dr.'s let dental assisting programs know they need an assistant so check with the program director of the school you just graduated from.

In terms of the Job Market, if you ended up making a trip, there are no guarantees that it will lead into Job. The suggestion that I have is to go through Health care Recruiting Firm in that specific market and see if they can assist you in the Job Search. The advantages are that the Recruiting Firm will have contacts with local businesses, hospital, medical organizations, doctors, so they can always point you in the right direction. The other option also is to go through at the State Organization to see if there are any small businesses that have reached out to them to find candidates.
Reply:One possibility would be to contact the school you trained with to see if any of the instructors have connections in your new area that you could speak to, or if they are willing to help you with job leads in that area. And in my city positions like dental assistant are often listed on http://ww.craigslist.org , that would at least give you some leads to send resumes to before you go. Good luck :)

Every place I send my resume to says they want more experience, well my question is: How do you get experience, if no one will give you a chance? I graduate with an Associates degree for Dental Assisting and I am certified and registered. I don't know what else to do. Employers will not give me a shot, so it's like i went to school for 3 years for nothing. I am really having a hard time with this. Any advice?

I once was in your shoes but now don't work as a DA because I decided I didn't like that work. However, addressing your question: I had graduated, passed both tests like you have done and it was very hard to get a job and I lived in a pretty big city. I did finally get one job that didn't work out and then another that I had for 9 mos. My advice, based on my experience, really, I know it's hard but keep trying and I'd also say to expand your application region if you don't mind commuting or moving. I have been looking for a permanent job now in a different field for 2 years and part of my problem is that the economy is bad where I live and there are more people looking for work for the number of jobs available only I am not in a position to move. You've got to be where the jobs are.

Seriously, sometimes you have to just find a job to tide you over while you wait to get your career off the ground. Talk to the placement office of the school where you earned your degree. They ought to be able to offer some help. Having their graduates in the unemployment line doesn't look good.
Reply:That happens sometimes but take another look at your resume, just maybe it isn't well written. It may help if you had a professional recruiter or resume writer give you some advice.

I have my own business and over the years I have hired many applicants right out of school because their resumes, their attitude and their self assurance made me stop and take a look and I am yet to regret it.

How your resume is written is important. Do not lie about your education or your skills because these can easily be checked.

How you behave on interviews will also affect your chances of getting the job.

Also if you just graduated, check with a job counselor from your institution and ask for advice and a referral.

I've worked as an expanded assistant for a Cosmetic Dentist for 10 years now. I am his lead assistant and am currently making $19.00 an hour. We do lots of oral surgery, Implants, crowns, veneers, composite fillings, zoom bleaching ect., ect. We also do conscious sedation and I'm in charge of administering all the I.V.s. I'm also in charge of all the ordering of Implants and supplies for the office. I enjoy my job dearly, but am starting to feel taken advantage of. I stand all day during chairside and the back office never takes a break during the day, I usually get a 30 min. lunch. The doctor tells the front office that his assistants are the work horses of the office, but his front office makes $26.00 an hour and gets to relax and visits amongst themselves throughout the day. Should I be feeling taken advantage of?

Do I have to be a dental assistant before becoming a hygenist?
Do you have to be a dental assistant to become a dental hygienist? Absolutely not. Yet it does look good on your application to dental hygiene school. The completion is tough. Your grades need to be high. Having dental experience is a plus...as many other applicants will have had this experience and they want placement in the school as much as you do.

If you work in a dental office you will learn not only dental procedures, terms, sterilization, instruments, etc. It will also help you to find out if you really want to work in people's mouths. You'll find out if you can handle the sight of blood without getting faint.Or if you can handle seeing patients who have gunk all over there teeth. Yes I said gunk and I mean it!

Seriously, if you want to be a dental hygienist you better know for sure...some people do it for the money and they last only a few years. You must want to help people heal. Can you handle all personality types? Etc. This you learn from experience, so I say work as an assistant. You'll need the money to pay for school.

Oh one last thing...I'm a hygienist who is fortunate enough to have an assistant. She had no prior experience. Now this would be the best...you sit side by side with a hygienist and really see what it's like. I wish you much luck in your endeavors..
Reply:No, they are two seperate schools. Being a dental assistant first might help you be sure you want to be a hygenist, though, and it would give you income to get you through hygenist school.
Reply:Technically, no. But, it will make you a more competitive applicant when you apply. Most schools look for applicants with experience in the dental field (ie. dental/hygiene assistant). When I got into hygiene school, I had 1 year of hygiene assisting experience and most of my classmates had been assistants at one time or another.
Reply:NO YOU DON'T HAVE TO BE AN ASSISTANT BEFORE BECOMING A HYGIENIST, HOWEVER, BEING AN ASSISTANT FIRST WILL GIVE YOU LOTS OF EXPERIENCE IN A DENTAL OFFICE BEFORE YOU BECOME A HYGIENIST.=O)
Reply:Not necessarily, however, being a DA first might help you be certain whether or not you really want to be a hygenist. Being an assistant would get you familiar with the terminology too. But it is entirely up to you.

If you're the patient and your dentist's assistant asked you what you do after work before coming to the dentist, would you think she was being nosey and trying to get in your business or just trying to make conversation to relax you?

I think she was being nosey. I think that you have your own personal life. She should not want to get into your business she has a job to do. Not to upset the patient is one thing that she is doing wrong. Good Luck though.

Reply:just trying to make conversation with you and relax you...trust me i've trained many dental assistants and sometimes they feel awkward and really dont know what to say...sometimes say the wrong thing...ive been there when they have...trust me questions have been worse trust me the questions could be like are you brushing at all...fired on girl for that...that was just wrong and wrong to say..they really dont have common sense sometimes...i can attest to that...you could always make something up next time...have fun with it:)he he:)have fun

Hi I live in Ontario CAN..2 yrs ago i went to CDI college and obtained my diploma in Dental Assisting. I did my co-op and graduated with honours. Then I got pregnant with my second child and my then husband didnt want me working . We are now seperated and I have the girls on my own. Since I havent really worked in the field, havent written the certification test and my ex will not return my texts so that I can write the exam I am trying to figure out what to do. I have considered volunteering but have no daycare even if I could find a place to do that. I didnt really like the dental assisting anyhow and I need a career that I can potentially make good money in and have medical benefits. Any suggestions about what i can do with my education? I have considered the insurance industry cause we learned how to fill out the dental claim forms but have no idea what is required to do that education wise. So Im kind of all over the place but bottom line I need to make a decent living ..HELP?

Any kind of sales position would be good, Make sure they have benefits. but you can make very good money.

get a job at a local Cell phone place. you can make 50,000 on up! If your hustling and getting people to sign up.
Reply:Sorry to hear about your seperation. All of us stay at home moms are at risk of being in your situation one day. The insurance industry is huge- a friend of mine gets paid for typing medical records for doctor's offices? She gets paid by the word and is able to work at home. I'm not sure how much you can make but it's something and I dont' think you need any type of credentials. Good luck to you!
